Abstract

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The obstructive sleep apnea is a treatable form of disordered breathing in which the upper airway closes repeatedly during sleep. Several studies have shown a prevalence of the syndrome among patients with stroke that exceeds 60 percent. We conduct this study to determine the relationship between obstructive sleep apnea and ischemic stroke at Prof R D Kandow Hospital Manado.  Object: There were 55 subjects who had  ischemic stroke and 50 subjects as a control subject. We collect the data at Neurovascular Clinic of Prof.R.D.Kandou Hospital, Manado. We conduct a cross sectional study among 105 subjects aged 50-80 using quisionaire berlin to assess the obstructive sleep apnea. We analyze the data using chi-square method. Result: There were 105 subjects recruited with mean age 59,4±8,57 years old and number of male and female were equal. Forty-two (76%) subjects were at high risk of  OSA  who had ischemic stroke and 13 (23%) subjects were low risk of OSA who had ischemic stroke. The data was analyzed by chi-square, there was a significant association between OSA and ischemic stroke p<0,05, OR= 7,538, 95% CI ( 3,166-17,951).  Discussion: Research subjects with high risk of OSA have higher risk of ischemic stroke incidence.
