CHARACTERISTICS OF PATIENTS WITH BALANCE DISORDERS AT NEUROOTOLOGY AND NEUROOPHTALMOLOGY CLINIC IN PROF. DR. RD KANDOU HOSPITAL MANADO

Abstract

Background: Balance disorders is common complaint in daily practice. Vertigo as part of the balance disorder ranks fifth in the most common neurological cases in Indonesia. Balance disorders examination is routinely carried out at Neuroophthalmology Neurootology clinic of Prof. Dr. RD. Kandou Hospital, which first started in January 2015. Objective :This study aims to determine the characteristics of patients with balance disorders at Neurotology and Neuroophtalmology Clinic of Prof. DR. RD Kandou  Hospital. Methods: Retrospective descriptive study, using medical record data from January 2015-December 2019, data found 246 patients diagnosed with balance disorders. The research variables were taken from the neurootology status of the special polyclinic Neurootology and Neuroophthalmology of Prof. Dr. RD. Kandou Hospital. Result :The mean age of patients was 50.18 ± 5.54 years, 132 women (53.66%), 114 men (46.34%). Symptoms of dizziness spinning 190 (77.23%), feeling of floating or swaying 51 (20.73%), autonomic disorder 122 (49.60%), hearing loss 63 (25.60%), visual disturbance 54 (21.95) %), postural symptoms 13 (5.28%), hyperventilation 10 (4.06%). Comorbid hypertension 106 (43.09%). Dixhalpike test abnormalities were 62 (25.2%), hearing acuity abnormalities 21 (8.54%). Balance test abnormalities such as Romberg 42 (17.07%), Romberg sharpened 76 (30.89%), Fukuda Steping Test 71 (28.86%), Head Shaking Test 37 (15.04%), Head Impulse Test 51 ( 20.73%). The diagnosis of peripheral vestibular vertigo 144 (58.54%), central vestibular vertigo 52 (21.14%) and non vestibular vertigo 50 (20.32%). Conclusions: The number of patients with balance disorders examined during the period of January 2015-December 2019 was 246 patients, the average age was 50.18 ± 5.54 years, the most age range was 20-60 years. Romberg balance check abnormalities (17.07%), Romberg sharpened (30.89%), Fukuda Steping Test (28.86%), Head Shaking Test (15.04), Head Impulse Test (20.73%).
